FAQs

  • How does Smilelign work?

Smilelign uses a series of virtually invisible, removable aligners to apply gentle pressure to your teeth and move them in small increments into a straighter position. You will need to replace your aligners every two to four weeks, as advised by us. The fact that we can plot your treatment using CAD-CAM technology means that you’ll need fewer aligners and your teeth can be straightened in as little as 15 weeks, although more complicated cases may take longer.

Each aligner is carefully designed to fit your teeth like a glove. You should have a clear idea about how many aligners you will need from the outset of your treatment.

  • Is there a special Smilelign process?

Your Smilelign treatment can be broken down into four stages. The first stage is for you to come into Spring Grove Clinic for a consultation so you can ask questions and we can find out more about your individual case.

During stage two, we will take impressions (moulds) of your teeth – this can be done with a special putty, scanning technology or using an intra-oral scanner. All of these methods are painless and only take a matter of minutes.

At stage three, our laboratory will make an initial clear Smilelign aligner for you to try on. This pre-aligner will give you the experience of wearing aligners, so you can see how comfortable and discreet they are for yourself. If you are happy with the pre-aligner, we will give the laboratory the go-ahead to make the rest of your aligners.

Stage four is the treatment stage. During the next 15 or so weeks, you will be given a series of aligners to replace at regular intervals. We will ask you to come in for occasional check-up appointments so we can monitor how your teeth are moving. Towards the end of your treatment, we may need to take another impression of your teeth to make a final retainer that you will wear to keep your teeth in their new, straight position.

  • Will Smilelign braces affect my lifestyle?

Smilelign is a popular orthodontic treatment because it causes minimal disruption to your daily life. The clear braces are almost invisible, slim line, comfortable and created to fit your teeth perfectly. You can also take your aligners out for eating, drinking, brushing or flossing so having your teeth straightened doesn’t need to affect your diet or your oral health routine.

  • Will Smilelign affect my speech?

Most people find that for 24 to 48 hours after having their Smilelign aligners fitted, they notice a slight difference to their speech as they adjust to the sensation of the aligners. Within a couple of days though, you should find that your speech is back to normal.

  • Could Smilelign damage my teeth because of how quickly the treatment works?

Don’t worry, Smilelign uses gentle forces to move your teeth, which means it is associated with fewer risks than conventional braces.

  • How many hours a day should I wear my Smilelign aligners?

To see the best results, we recommend that you wear your aligners for 22 to 23 hours every single day during your treatment. This means that you should only take them out to eat or drink anything other than water, and to clean your teeth. Your Smilelign aligners can be taken out for special occasions but only rarely.
