Our Dental Hygienist Service
A big part of keeping your teeth and gums looking healthy and functioning as well as possible is having a good oral health routine. Our dental hygienist will not only give your teeth a deep clean, scale and polish regularly, but also help you to be aware of where you are prone to build-ups of plaque and tartar and how to adjust your brushing and flossing accordingly. By seeing our dental hygienist you can help to stop gum disease in its tracks and keep your breath lovely and fresh.

If you notice any signs that you might have gum disease, you should book an appointment with our hygienist straight away. Gum (periodontal) disease can cause bleeding gums, bad breath, swelling and tooth loss; it has also been associated in clinical studies with wider health issues such as certain types of cancers, heart disease, strokes and diabetes, as well as premature labour and low birth weights. In part, this might be because the bacteria within plaque is extra sticky and once it enters the body’s systems via the gums, it clings on for dear life!

FAQ's
A Dental Hygienist is someone who is specially trained in preventing and treating gum disease, which is the main cause of tooth loss. Our dental hygienist can also give you advice all aspects of your oral health.
Each time you come in for an appointment with our dental hygienist, she will ask you about your medical history and whether you’re having any current dental problems. She will check how your gums are looking at the moment and whether you have any signs of gum disease, and may offer advice about ways you can tweak your cleaning, flossing or diet to help your gums stay healthy.
The hygienist will then remove any hard deposits (calculus) and stains from your teeth using a special handheld device, before cleaning and polishing them so they look and feel extra clean and healthy by the end of the appointment.
Dental hygienists have been specially trained in all aspects of gum health and can give you time dedicated to tackling or preventing gum disease. By having your dental care taken care of by a dentist and a hygienist, you get the best of both worlds in terms of keeping your teeth and gums as healthy as possible.
Your appointment with the dental hygienist will usually take about half an hour.
How often you see our dental hygienist will depend on your individual case. Some people are prone to gum disease and the build-up of tartar, even with a good oral health routine, so may need to come in for a scale and polish every three months, while other people need just one or two appointments a year. Your dentist will advise you.
